CDC warns of parasite that may crash your pool party

CDC warns of parasite that may crash your pool party

Showering, even for a minute or two, can remove most of the dirt from your body. The parasite is notoriously hard to kill and can survive up to 10 days in chlorinated water.

"To help protect your family and friends from Crypto and other diarrhea-causing germs, do not swim or let your kids swim if sick with diarrhea,"said Michele Hlavsa, chief of CDC's Healthy Swimming Program".

CDC also warns parents and swimmer of swimming when sick and that they should wait at least two weeks before any symptoms of potential cases of crypto to ease off or disappear.

A person can get ill from cryptosporidiosis after being exposed to contaminated swimming pool water, water in water parks, drinking water and food, as well as from contact with people or animals who have been infected.

But the findings are timely, according to Jason Tetro, a Canadian epidemiologist and author of the bestselling book, The Germ Files.

Before you cancel your child's swim lessons, however, the CDC said it's not sure what accounts for the rise in recorded outbreaks.

In North Carolina, from 2011 to 2012, cases of crypto actually fell from 115 to 89, and in SC, cases also dropped from 132 to 72 cases.

According to one report, the reported prevalence of cryptosporidium among patients with gastroenteritis is 1% to 4% in Europe and North America and 1% to 37% in Africa, Asia, Australia, and South and Central America.

According to the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report issued Thursday by the CDC, outbreaks of such infections from polls and water playgrounds have doubled in the U.S. from the year 2014 to 2016. In 2011, there were only 13.

OH experienced a almost fivefold increase in cryptosporidiosis cases in 2016, with 1,940 reported cases compared with an average 399 cases during the prior four years.

"Swim diapers do not contain diarrhea", she said.

"You're bringing all sorts of bacteria you're going to be spreading and this could be potentially disease-causing, but if the water is chlorinated, the bacteria doesn't survive very well", Tetro said.

The CDC also said swimmers should try to avoid ingesting pool water.

"There's a lot of seasonal staff at these public venues, and they need to be properly educated before they're out there doing pool maintenance", Li said.

So how do you stay safe? This as a new survey finds 25-percent of adults would swim within one hour of having diarrhea.

Shower with soap before you start swimming. "If water is getting into that diaper, then water is getting out".
