Celtics follow euphoria of winning lottery with dud on court

A day after winning the National Basketball Association draft lottery and earning the right to the No. 1 overall pick, the Celtics were reminded of the gap between them and the defending National Basketball Association champion Cavaliers when Cleveland opened the Eastern Conference finals with a 117-104 victory on Wednesday night.

A loss on Friday would also leave the Celtics with the formidable proposition of having to win four out of five games to take the Eastern Conference Finals - a almost impossible duty against the Cavaliers that since LeBron James returned to Cleveland in 2014-15 season has a 33-4 postseason record against the Eastern Conference teams.

Cleveland built a 26-point lead in the first half, expanding it to 28 - matching the largest home playoff deficit in Celtics history - in the third quarter before Boston cut it down to 17 at the end of the quarter. Boston must find a way to slow down James while not getting eaten up by a supporting cast, which other than Kevin Love's big game, didn't produce at its usual high rate. Star guard Isaiah Thomas finished with 17 points and a game-high 10 assists.

The Celtics missed 11 of their first 14 shots and trailed 22-9 with four minutes left in the first quarter. Game 2 is on Friday night before the series shifts to Cleveland for Games 3 and 4.

"They hit us first".

Love averaged a quiet 13.8 points in the first two rounds, then broke out against a Boston team that knocked him out of the 2015 playoffs when he became tangled with Kelly Olynyk and dislocated his shoulder.

For his part, Thomas said there doesn't need to be a lot of soul searching.

"I just think that they were the more aggressive team with more energy, and they got us down from the beginning", said Celtics center Al Horford, who had 11 points and eight rebounds.

It was a performance reminiscent of the 6-foot-10 power forward's big-number days with the Minnesota Timberwolves, when he was the first option on offense and often the second and third as well.

Once the game started, there was little to get excited about for Boston.

The shoulder was working just fine Wednesday, and he scored in the paint and from the outside. Boston was 2 for 16 and shot 35 percent overall in the first half.

The Cavs, playing their first game since May 7, put on a clinic, leading wire to wire.

"We can't panic. It's only one game".

Or maybe Bill Murray can come help.

"He has to see bodies behind me", Crowder said.
