China Fires Off Missile In Possible 'Warning' To US, South Korea

China also hopes the new South Korean government attaches importance to China's concerns and takes steps to promote the stable and healthy development of ties, Xi said. Moon also spoke with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Thursday, with the two agreeing to cooperate closely on the North Korea issue.

Moon said the ultimate goal of sanctions was to bring the DPRK to the dialogue table to abolish its nuclear program. President Moon stressed that the alliance is the basis of Seoul's security and diplomatic policy direction and will continue that way, showing appreciation for President Trump's efforts to prioritize the North Korean issue.

In their phone call, Trump congratulated Moon on his election victory and his country's "peaceful, democratic transition of power", a White House statement said. As for curbing North Korea's nuclear and military ambitions, both leaders agreed they should be willing to negotiate with the regime, but also enforce sanctions if necessary.

Moon's pick for National Intelligence Service chief is Suh Hoon, a longtime intelligence official Moon said would be the right man to push reforms at NIS, which has always been accused of meddling in domestic politics.

In his inaugural address Wednesday, South Korea's president said he would consider visiting Pyongyang under the right conditions. Moon advocates a less confrontational policy.

"How to respond to North Korea.is an urgent issue".

"Mun Jae-In... was elected to be the 19th-term "president" with 41 percent voting rate", it said, using the McCune-Reischauer transliteration system that is standard in North Korea.

Suga only said Abe told Moon that the agreement should be "appropriately managed", but did not elaborate.

However, US taking unilateral action would be unwise given that its allies South Korea and Japan are within range of North Korean missiles and artillery.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and new South Korean President Moon Jae-in have discussed nuclear tensions, with the latter addressing the raft of problems posed by the North's defiance.

"In face of the impeachment and arrest of an incumbent president, our people opened the path toward the future for the Republic of Korea", said Moon, referring to South Korea's formal name.

Moon and Trump may also disagree on the USA missile defense system THAAD.

In his speech, Moon, 64, also pledged to sever what he described as the collusive ties between business and government that have plagued many of South Korea's family-run conglomerates, known as chaebol, and vowed to be incorruptible.

South Korea says it needs Thaad to defend itself from North Korea, but China believes its radars threaten regional security.
