College lacrosse: Desperate Tar Heels win ACC, look to defend NCAA title

The North Carolina men's lacrosse family wasn't ready to say goodbye just yet. The Heels (30-2) win their eighth championship in program history, and third under the leadership of head coach Brian Kalbas, who brought home previous titles in 2011 and 2016.

The University of North Carolina (UNC) women's lacrosse team defeated Syracuse 18-11 on Sunday to win its second consecutive ACC Championship. It's motivation - we want more time with our brothers. This season has been a major drop off for North Carolina though, as they enter the game with a losing record. "We're just young, this is my first year coaching in the ACC and knowing at any moment teams can turn it on and that's what Syracuse did as they hit the switch and we couldn't answer". As a top-16 team in the country, the Deacs are scheduled to host, but official word will be made on Tuesday when the tournament field is formally announced at 5 p.m.

With the Blue Devil defense surrendering a pair of hat tricks and five different North Carolina players racking up three or more points, the Tar Heels continued their undefeated streak in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. "Culture is everything that we do and I know we're going to be there". "We didn't catch any breaks, but this year you just feel that confidence".

Having won twice in the tournament, Breschi has other goals.

Top-ranked Syracuse is the reigning back-to-back conference champion in the ACC, and Friday will start the Orange's pursuit of a third straight.

This was North Carolina's ninth ACC Tournament title, though its first since 2013. Hiatt (2-1) got Beer to fly out and only a hit by pitch in the 10th kept the Tar Heel closer from being ideal over 2.2 innings. With two more strikeouts Saturday, Hiatt has 48 in 35.1 innings of work. What is interesting is that no faceoff man was listed on the team.

In a weird statistical quirk, Notre Dame won the first five face-offs of the game but over the same stretch turned the ball over five times-and that played into Carolina scoring 58 seconds into the contest and building that 4-0 advantage by the 7:43 nark of the opening period (the second of those after an Irish penalty).

Gleason cut the lead to two goals early in the second quarter, beating the Tar Heel keeper off a pass from Ryder Garnsey to make the score 4-2 in favor of North Carolina. Junior Alie Jimerson and freshman Emily Hawryschuk netted back-to back goals to put the Orange up 6-4, but the Tar Heels ended the half with three straight goals to take a 7-6 lead into the locker room at halftime. Unfortunately, this weekend saw Clemson on the wrong side of three comebacks by the #4 UNC Tar Heels. At no point, she said, did she step beyond the parameters of the game plan in an attempt to take command.

Sergio Salcido had three goals and two assists. The last of those Tar Heel goals came by senior defenseman Jack Lambert (he also had two assists) after coming into the tournament with only a single goal in 2017-and then notching two Friday night against Syracuse.
