Disney sets May 2019 release date for new 'Star Wars' film

The Han Solo movie, still officially untitled, comes to theaters on May 25, 2018, setting Star Wars fans up for a one-year wait until Episode IX.

In just over two years, the third Star Wars trilogy will come to a close.

This shift in release dates marks Rian Johnston's The Last Jedi as the final Star Wars movie to be released during the holiday season.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is slated for release on December 15, 2017.

Obviously, don't expect any real details about Episode 9 for quite some time. Kennedy touched on how she and the team have to balance several things at once: now they're focused on the Han Solo movie but are also about to start script reading and revisions on Episode IX, as well as looking into spin-off movies. The only other films now set for that date are Minecraft and Universal's untitled Doctor Dolittle movie, but you can bet that they're both going to get the hell out of Dodge to make way for the Star Wars behemoth.

Disney and Lucasfilm have booked a date in theatres for Colin Trevorrow's "Star Wars: Episode IX" - May 24, 2019. Only of late has the Star Wars universe migrated to December with 2015's "The Force Awakens", last year's "Rogue One" and this year's upcoming "The Last Jedi". The follow-up to the surprise animated juggernaut released in 2013 will be six years in the making, and expectations are high for a the franchise which has been dominant in toy sales ever since. What will probably be Harrison Ford's swan song as Indy was originally scheduled for July 19, 2019.

Director Jon Favreau's live-action Lion King, featuring Donald Glover as Simba, was expected to debut on July 19, 2019, while the animated sequel to the smash-hit Frozen will come later that year on November 27, 2019.
