Eye test inventor Ferdinand Monoyer celebrated with new Google Doodle

Eye test inventor Ferdinand Monoyer celebrated with new Google Doodle

He served as an associate professor of medical physics at the University of Strasbourg from 1871, and later worked in Nancy and Lyon.

Monoyer died on 13 July 1912, aged 76. He is also best known for creating or developing the Monoyer chart.

Today's Google doodle plays with the concepts of vision clarity as a tribute to Ferdinand Monoyer.

The diopter measures the distance you would have to be from text to read it.

A closer look at the Monoyer chart would reveal that the alphabets not only represents diopters, from smallest to largest, but also feautres it's creators name!

A colourful animated doodle is dedicated to French ophthalmologist Ferdinand Monoyer.

In 1872, Moyoner made his biggest contrition to ophthalmology, which is the branch of medicine concerning the eyeball.

The French ophthalmologist developed the diopter, a unit of measure of the optical power of a lens or curved mirror.

Interestingly, he hides his name on either side of the Monoyer chart.

The Monoyer chart has largely been replaced by the Snellen chart, which was invented soon after Monoyer's and places the largest letters at the top. The first line letter of each line from the second to the sixth rows spells his surname, while the last later of each line from the second to the tenth line spells out his first.

Monoyer was 5 years old when his father who was a military doctor died.

The University of Lyon was the last university where Monoyer taught from 1877 to 1909.

Monoyer's Lyon villa is often frequented by visitors and remains open for events.
