Gunmen attack Jalalabad TV station in Afghanistan

Gunmen attack Jalalabad TV station in Afghanistan

According to Nangarhar's provincial administration, all the three attackers had been killed in their blasts and security forces firings within three hours.

"We can confirm that a number of insurgents have entered the building".

Pashtun Khan, an officer in the Nangarhar police chief's office, confirmed the battle was underway near the state-run radio and television building in the provincial capital, Jalalabad.

So-called Islamic State has claimed the attack, which is near an IS stronghold on the eastern border with Pakistan.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack in Jalalabad, which is the capital of Nangarhar province.

TRT World spoke with Kabul-based journalist Bilal Sarwary for the latest.

A crisis response team in Afghanistan is searching a television station building room by room after attackers stormed the premises, in an ongoing situation that has left at least two people dead.

Civilians are often targeted by militants in Afghanistan in bombings and attacks by gunmen.

The Taliban, which also has a strong presence in the region, denied responsibility.

"They took control of the district governor's compound, police headquarters and the main bazaar in Aqtepa, now they are pushing the Taliban further back", Akbari said. Last month, the U.S. military dropped a massive bomb on IS positions in the province, killing dozens of the extremist group's fighters.

Islamic State has recently been hit hard by USA air strikes and special forces operations.

An RTA employee said at least 40 people work in the compound and many managed to escape but some were still trapped inside.
