Hawaii-bound passengers noticed unruly man before take-off

Two U.S. stealth fighter jets escorted a Honolulu-bound American Airlines aircraft on Friday after a man caused a disturbance aboard.

Local TV news network Hawaii News Now reported that the crew, an off-duty Los Angeles police officer and passengers were able to subdue the man, believed to be Turkish, using duct tape, pillows and blankets.

LAX police identified the man as Anil Uskanil, CBS News' Kris Van Cleave reports.

The passenger was reportedly subdued, returned to his seat, and restrained with duct tape for the duration of the flight.

The threat of terrorism prompted authorities to scramble two Hawaii Air National Guard F-22 Raptor fighter jets to escort the airliner on the last leg of its trip to Hawaii on Friday.

In this photo provided by Donna Basden, a man is escorted off an American Airlines flight after it landed in Honolulu, Friday, May 19, 2017. American Airlines said he then went back through a TSA checkpoint in Terminal 4, where his flight to Honolulu was leaving from, and boarded the flight.

LAX police cite him and determines that while he appears intoxicated he is not considered drunk. "Local law enforcement responded once the civilian airliner was on the ground", said Commander Dave Benham, without elaborating on the nature of the disturbance or name of the airline.

"At this time, there are no other reports of disruptions to flights", read the statement.

Instead, they said, he was stopped by a flight attendant who had jammed her serving cart in the doorway that separates first class from coach.

Although police are still trying to determine a motive for the cause, the man reportedly headed into the first class cabin with a blanket over his head in what flight crew believed was meant to be a breach of the cockpit door.

"Due to a disturbance during the flight, the crew requested that law enforcement meet the aircraft upon landing in Honolulu", American Airlines said in a statement. He refused to comply with the instructions of a crew member who asked him to return to his post and then he seemed to be moving to the cockpit door.

"The flight attendants just were really heroic", Lorenzen said.

Earlier, the man, who purchased his ticket around midnight, had an encounter with airport personnel at the airport in Los Angeles, an official briefed on the incident told CNN. The Department of Homeland Security is continuing to monitor all flights "out of an abundance of caution", it said.
