India should join Belt and Road forum for mutual interest: Chinese diplomat

India should join Belt and Road forum for mutual interest: Chinese diplomat

Xi called on both sides to enhance practical cooperation and implement plans and projects to promote Belt and Road Initiative construction, especially in capacity cooperation and investment.

"We need to seek results through greater openness and cooperation, avoid fragmentation, refrain from setting inhibitive thresholds for cooperation or pursuing exclusive arrangements and rejecting protectionism".

While some see Beijing's project as a geopolitical power play, Mr Xi has insisted that the Belt and Road is open to everybody.

One Belt One Road, OBOR aims to expand links between Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America and beyond underpinned by billions of dollars in infrastructure investment.

The president was among 29 heads of state and the representatives of 130 countries attending the two-day forum, which started on Sunday.

Qi pointed out the role played by the fund since its establishment in December 2014 in investment, financing, and supporting worldwide cooperation within the initiative of the economic belt for the Silk Road in the 21st century, known as OBOR.

The project, unveiled by President Xi Jinping in 2013, spans some 65 countries representing 60 percent of the world's population and around a third of global gross domestic product.

Beijing is hosting the Belt and Road forum on 14-15 May.

Russian President Vladimir Putin denounced North Korea's latest missile test as a "dangerous" move that goes against regional interests.

"We are of firm belief that connectivity initiatives must be based on universally recognised worldwide norms, good governance, rule of law, openness, transparency and equality", Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) official spokesperson Gopal Baglay said in a press conference.

India's already out, due to included projects for roads and railways that run through disputed territory in rival Pakistan.

While CPEC is highlighted as "flagship project", the B&R includes the Bangladesh, China, India and Myanmar (BCIM) Economic Corridor, New Eurasian Land Bridge, China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor, China-Indochina Peninsula Economic Corridor and 21st century Maritime Silk Road.

"CPEC is a project that's between China and Pakistan and I think work has started (on it)", Zhanwu said when asked whether China would consider rethinking the CPEC alignment given India's concerns.

India gave the two-day mega Belt and Road conference a miss, raising objection to the CPEC corridor which passes through Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan-administered Kashmir that New Delhi claims as its own.
