Man phoned ex as he shot strangers at pool party

"We have no information that they even knew each other", she said.

"See wherever the evidence leads, if it leads to a suicide mission, to someone who had issues with people of color", Bowser said.

Zimmerman said investigators worked through the night to discover a motive for the shooting.

Peter Selis, 49, resident of the same luxury apartment complex where the incident occurred, was reportedly depressed after his relationship with his girlfriend ended.

A spokesperson for the San Diego Police Department says that the police department received numerous calls just after 6 p.m.to 911 about there being an active shooter at a University City apartment complex. He called Clark a close friend, someone who was just as lovely on the inside as she was out. He said the gunman started shooting at the officers, but they shot back at him, killing him.

Griffin briefly froze and then dropped to the ground as six rounds sent people scattering and dropped others on the pool deck.

Selis politely declined, and it was only a few minutes later that he pulled a gun from his waistband and opened fire on everyone in sight.

"He was on the cellphone, talking with his ex-girlfriend, while he was continuing to shoot", Zimmerman said.

Eventually, the gunman, later identified as Peter Selos, was fatally shot by the police.

Today is the man's actual birthday, Griffin said.

Three officers shot Selis after he pointed his gun at them. Zimmerman said Selis wanted his ex girlfriend to keep listening as he kept firing, perhaps in anticipation of his ultimate demise and death.

As officers approach the pool area, the suspect fires his weapon, according to SDPD Chief Shelley Zimmerman. One women suffered a gunshot to the chest and is expected to recover; a man suffered a broken wrist and hand along with a concussion from jumping over a fence; a third did not consent to having their injuries reported but was being treated; and the fourth was Thomas Blea who also spoke at the news conference.

Besides the seven who were shot, an eighth person broke his arm while fleeing the gunfire, police said.

"There is zero information to indicate that race played a factor in this bad horrific crime", San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said at a press conference. "The victims were targeted for no other reason but their mere presence in the vicinity of the suspect".
