Molinari leads after Wells Fargo opener

Molinari leads after Wells Fargo opener

Seamus Power is just two shots off the lead at the Wells Fargo Championship after a first round four under par in North Carolina.

Pettersson is a member at this week's venue and now holds the course record with a 62, but he was 17 shots higher Thursday during a 7-ovver 79 that included no birdies and left him ahead of only two players in the 156-man field.

Before the injury Johnson had won three victories from as many starts on the US PGA Tour as he replaced Jason Day at the top of the world golf rankings.

While Johnson has been focused on healing his badly bruised back since slipping on a staircase in Augusta, former world number one Scott has been enjoying time with his wife and young daughter in Sweden. His health is fine.

Molinari, who chipped in a birdie at the 18th, has a slender lead over four men on five under, with Alex Noren, JB Holmes, Grayson Murray and Brian Campbell all firing 67s.

The top-ranked Ko edged Menendez 3 and 2 on Thursday at Club de Golf Mexico in the event that switched from stroke to match play and from November to April.

"It's a great track, not the longest, but especially in the breeze you need to hit the ball in the right spot on the greens", he said.

"I fell good. As far as physically, no issues", Johnson said.

"Since I haven't played in so long, I'm happy with the way I played", the American said in a post-round interview on PGA Tour LIVE.

"I'll take it, though", he said. "I enjoyed even the challenging shots they have out there". I felt like I hit good putts, just nothing was going in. Molinari closed the round with a 25-foot chip-in for birdie.

Holmes birdied his last three holes for his 67. Johnson bogeyed two holes but managed four birdies.

Many players approached the first round apprehensively on a course few had played before this week.

"I haven't played. any competitive rounds since, what, six weeks ago".

Johnson spent extra time during his pro-am studying each of the greens and the surrounding chipping areas.

It is a course that many players this week have compared to Augusta National where Molinari finished T33 last month.

Johnson said he has been without pain in his back since late last week, just about the time he caught a cold.
