San Diego shooting: What we know so far

Selis began shooting into a crowd of at least 30 people who were attending a pool party at the La Jolla Crossroads Apartments on Judicial Drive around 6 p.m., Zimmerman said.

One woman has died and seven other people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds or broken bones following Sunday's mass shooting at the La Jolla Crossroads apartment complex.

Witnesses said he smirked as he calmly shot people after being invited to join the pool party.

The gunman's family members reportedly told police they knew Selis was depressed after the breakup with his girlfriend but they had no idea he would carry out the deadly shooting.

The alleged gunman, identified as Peter Selis, 49, was shot and killed by police, San Diego police said.

At the time of this writing, investigators haven't determined a motive for the shooting.

"These victims were just in his vicinity when he committed this bad tragedy", Chief Shelley Zimmerman said.

"What started as a celebration of a friend's birthday turned into a tragedy of epic proportions for all those in attendance".

It was earlier reported that eight persons were shot but the figure was later revised to seven.

According to San Diego court records, there was a legal separation with minor children in the marriage between Peter Selis and his wife, Michelle Selis, that dates to 2008. Berry said those things aren't a common sight at the complex, which college students, physicians and military families, among others, call home.

"He had his beer in one hand and his gun in the other", said the witness, who provided only his first name, John, to the news station.

"This is truly a horrific act of violence", San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said at a news conference.

The gunman was described as a white male, reports CBS San Diego affiliate KFMB-TV.

Another witness said Selis sat in a lawn chair during the incident, and was "telling people to leave". He told her what he had done and that officers were there.

A woman who was in the pool area at the time of the shooting said she was able to get away from the shooter while he was reloading his gun.

According to an article on, Selis filed Chapter 13 bankruptcy in 2015 as a joint debtor with his former spouse, Patricia Martinez.
