South Korea's new leader discusses North Korea, defence system with China's Xi

"To judge from the missile remains disclosed by media, it was a DF-26 that was tested recently, also known as the "aircraft carrier killer" missile", Song Zhongping, a military expert who used to serve in the PLA Rocket (Missile) Force, told state-run Global Times.

Asked if the test's location in the Bohai Sea, close to the tensed Korean Peninsula, could show that the test was specifically aimed at Seoul's THAAD deployment, Song said that this was unlikely as Bohai is China's usual weapons testing ground.

The South's president additionally dove straight into Beijing's disapproval of Seoul and Washington's move to deploy an American anti-missile system, THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense), on South Korean soil. China has vowed appropriate response for THAAD missile batteries. Moon responded that he's aware of China's concerns and he hopes the two countries can have a greater understanding of each other's positions on the system, it said.

During his call with Japanese Prime Minster Shinzo Abe, the two leaders agreed that their countries must not let their hard history hamper co-operation in dealing with North Korea's nuclear program, Moon's office said.

Moon said he hopes to meet Xi at an early date and Xi formally invited Moon to visit Beijing, it said.

The Chinese president noted that denuclearization of the Korean peninsula was also a goal for China, adding that the country supported peace and stability in the region. Moon said during the campaign for this week's snap election that he wanted to review that decision.

Despite Chinese anger at North Korea's repeated nuclear and missile tests, China remains the isolated state's most important economic and diplomatic backer, even as Beijing has signed up for tough United Nations sanctions against Pyongyang.

He and Xi agreed to exchange special envoys soon and Moon said he also planned to send a delegation to Beijing to discuss the North Korean nuclear problem and the THAAD deployment, according to Yoon.

China's foreign ministry made no direct mention of the anti-missile system in its statement about the discussions.

Moon came into office Wednesday, only one day after he won the rare presidential by-election caused by the March 10 ouster of his conservative predecessor, Park Geun-hye, due to corruption allegations. China and South Korea, as well as Russian Federation, the United States and Japan took part in talks with North Korea on the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula from 2003 until 2009, when Pyongyang withdrew from the six-party talks.
