'Star Wars: Episode IX' Sets Summer 2019 Release Date

Disney and Lucasfilm on Tuesday announced that the third and final chapter of the new Star Wars trilogy, Star Wars: Episode IX, will release on May 24, 2019.

As well as the Episode IX release date, Lucasfilm and Disney also announced when the fifth installment of the Indiana Jones saga will arrive. This represents a major shift from Lucasfilm scheduling its Star Wars movies for the holiday season, but it also represents the franchise going "home", so to speak.

The second part of the current trilogy, "Star Wars: The Last Jedi, " will be in theaters in December.

In the meantime, there will be plenty of Star Wars content for fans of the franchise to consume.

Star Wars: Episode IX will be released on May 24, 2019 and will be directed by Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World).

Leia will already appear in this year's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which comes out December 17, since filming had wrapped before her death.

This is when you can expect to see some of the biggest movies hitting theaters over the next few years. The studio gave no explanation for the change in the release date for the as-yet untitled film that had been originally scheduled for July 2019.

As for the untitled "Indiana Jones 5", the 2020 release date will come when iconic actor Harrison Ford will be 77 years old.

Having a release date in place is nearly a sure sign that more information will be coming forth before we know it. Other films on Disney's 2019 slate include "Frozen 2", Pixar's "Toy Story 4", and Jon Favreau's live-action adaptation of "The Lion King".
