Trump creates panel to investigate voter fraud

Vermont Business Magazine Secretary of State Jim Condos has released a statement in response to President Trump's Executive Order Thursday establishing a Commission on Election Integrity.

"The president's committed to the thorough review of registration and voting issues in federal elections", said White House press secretary Sarah Sanders. "When Attorney General Jeff Sessions led a similar effort as a former prosecutor in Alabama, it had a chilling effect on the black vote", said Kristen Clarke, the head of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

The Utah Republican said his committee will not be investigating voter fraud.

Trump named Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach as vice chairman.

He says it's his belief there could be similar cases in other states.

Two years ago, Kobach prevailed upon Kansas lawmakers to give him the power to prosecute voter fraud cases, an authority no other secretary of state in the country has.

It will "study the registration and voting processes used in Federal elections" as well as "fraudulent voter registrations and fraudulent voting", the order says. Moscow has denied such interference.

Kobach is the only secretary of state in the US who has prosecutorial power in election law (thanks to a bill passed by state legislators in 2015), and since taking office in 2011, he has filed nine cases against people accused of voting multiple times in different states.

Trump has asserted he would have won the popular vote in the 2016 presidential election had it not been for illegal votes cast.

This comes after POTUS signed an Executive Order to implement a commission to examine voter fraud in federal elections. That's something the president talked about in February in an interview with Bill O'Reilly on Fox News.

"If you are at the grocery store and you don't bag your own groceries you complain about it but it doesn't really change the fact that your eggs are broken right?" "We have a president who has said he won the popular vote when he did not". And, Pam, this commission took a while to set up.

"It should be no surprise that the election commission will not be looking at how proposed remedies will lead to eligible people not being able to cast ballots", Persily added. "If you bag your own groceries, you don't have as much to complain about because you have a little more control over what goes into the bag".

The commission would serve to fulfill another one of Trump's campaign promises to root out voter fraud.

MCEVERS: Who is on the commission?

The ACLU's FOIA request targets our head-of-state's public comments on voter fraud, citing a January 25 interview with ABC. And he's very controversial. He has been pushing a proof-of-citizenship voter registration requirement that's been tied up in a years-long, multi-lawsuit legal battle. That law requires voters to provide a birth certificate or passport to register. He also said that there was unspecified voter fraud in three states he lost: California, New Hampshire and Virginia.

Kobach said the commission would conduct the most expansive study of the issue of voter fraud to date and would have full-time staff from the vice president's office and the Department of Homeland Security. So what's the response been? Although Trump has provided no evidence to support his claim that almost three million people voted illegally (and only for Hillary Clinton), he has relentlessly pushed his narrative. There's just no evidence.

Democrats and voting rights groups called the panel a sham, arguing there are few, if any, credible allegations of significant voter fraud.

The notion that undocumented immigrants are perverting the American democratic system by voting illicitly isn't anything new.
