US Service Member Killed In Blast Near Mosul, Iraq

A US service member has died in the line of duty, CNN reports.

Smoke and dust billow following an airstrike near Mosul in November.

The incident marks the second American military fatality since the start of the Mosul operation against the Islamic State group more than six months ago, the Associated Press reports.

A USA service member died of wounds sustained from an explosion outside the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Saturday, the US-led military coalition said.

Two U.S. service members were killed late Thursday and a third was wounded when they came under attack during a raid against Islamic State fighters in southern Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan, a Department of Defense official confirmed to Fox News.

Saturday's death comes just two days after two US service members were killed in Afghanistan while conducting a joint U.S.

The Pentagon said more than 100 USA special operations forces are working with Iraqi units in and around Mosul, while hundreds of others are playing a supporting role at staging bases farther from the front lines.

In October 2016, coalition forces launched the battle to retake the strategic city. Some of the US forces are in roles that bring them close and sometimes to the front lines. United States troops are not supposed to be taking part in actual combat in the city, but providing advance support and advice and helping with de-mining efforts around the area.

Operation Inherent Resolve is the us -led operation to push the ISIS out of Syria and Iraq.

Islamic State has lost most of the city's districts since the offensive began in October and is now surrounded in the northwestern districts, including the historic Old City center.
