Video allegedly shows Palestinian hunger striker Marwan Barghouti sneaking food

Around 1,500 Palestinian prisoners are on the 22nd day of a mass hunger strike for better conditions in Israeli prisons, led by senior Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti.

The hunger strike launched three weeks ago with a Barghouti Op-Ed in The New York Times.

Israel has released a video said to show the leader of a Palestinian hunger strike sneaking biscuits in his jail cell.

Barghouti, a leader of the second Palestinian uprising, is serving five life terms after being convicted by an Israeli court of directing two shooting attacks and a bombing that killed five people.

That appeared to be given credence by an interview given by Israel's public security minister, Gilad Erdan, to army radio in which he appeared to confirm that the footage of Barghouti had been obtained as part of measures to undermine the hunger strike. "Barghouti is a murderer and hypocrite who urged his fellow prisoners to strike and suffer while he ate behind their back". Just like he lied to the world when he wrote in the New York Times that he made a decision to strike in order to protest ill-treatment, he lied to the Palestinian public when he claimed to be striking.

"The worldwide community must take action to put pressure on Israel to grant the demands of the Palestinian hunger strikers".

Polls suggest that the 58-year-old Barghouti is the most popular choice among Palestinians to succeed 82-year-old Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Barghouti is seen as a possible successor to Abbas.

Haaretz cited unnamed sources in the Prison Service as saying they set Barghouti up with the food in order to see if he was sticking to his hunger strike.

Barghouti's wife, Fadwa, likewise told reporters on Sunday evening that Israel was waging a campaign of "psychological warfare" against hunger-striking Palestinian prisoners.

"Prisoners have been denied access to legal representation, many have been locked in solitary confinement, access to vital medical services is not adequate and family visits are only permitted twice a month".
