Australia lose skipper Jedinak for Confed Cup

Australia lose skipper Jedinak for Confed Cup

The Australian national team are to be without their captain Mile Jedinak during their congested fixture list this June due to a groin injury.

Goals to Thiago Silva, Taison and Souza in the second half rounded out a comfortable win for the Selecao but Postecoglou argued it wasn't all negative at his post-match press conference.

With eight players coming into Australia's starting XI compared to last week's World Cup qualifying triumph over Saudi Arabia, plus six substitutes in the second half, Postecoglou claimed those changes led to a disjointed performance from the Socceroos during periods against Brazil.

Ange Postecoglou has taken responsibility for the Socceroos' heavy defeat to Brazil in Tuesday night's friendly at the MCG, but declared he does not care if critics "go hard" over the 4-0 scoreline.

"Losing Mile is a blow as he's not only an important member of the midfield, but a great leader amongst the group", Postecoglou added.

Mile Jedinak has scored 15 goals, mostly from the penalty spot, for Australia.

"I'm disappointed to miss the Confederations Cup as it is something we have been looking forward to and working towards since we won the Asian Cup", Jedinak said in a news release.

It is expected that Austrian-based holding midfielder James Jeggo will replace him, but Mark Milligan, Massimo Luango and Jackson Irvine are also in contention to to fill the large gap the Villa man has made in the Aussie's midfield.

While Aston Villa will expect Jedinak to report for preseason, the bigger picture for the Socceroos is their final two World Cup qualifiers away to Japan and at home against Thailand.

Observers who witnessed the ease with which Brazil rolled the Socceroos will rightly view it as an ominous sign of what is to come in Russian Federation against World Cup champions Germany, the highly ranked Chile and African champions Cameroon.

"We needed to get some game time into some guys - we couldn't go over there with guys having not played for a very long time".
