Boris Johnson denies plot to topple UK PM Theresa May

This is expected to mean a softer Brexit negotiating position than may have been the case under a Conservative majority.

Embattled British Prime Minister Theresa May appointed ministers to her shaky government Sunday, as some Conservative colleagues rallied to support her - and others said her days were numbered after last week's disastrous election.

The DUP, whose 10 seats would allow the government to get measures through Parliament, is a socially conservative pro-British Protestant group that opposes abortion and same-sex marriage and includes both environmentalists and climate-change deniers among its senior ranks.

The Conservative leader had called Thursday's snap election in a bid to extend her majority and strengthen her hand in the European Union divorce negotiations, but her gamble backfired spectacularly.

"What the country needs more than ever is certainty, and having secured the largest number of votes and the greatest number of seats in the general election, it is clear that only the Conservative and Unionist party has the legitimacy and ability to provide that certainty by commanding a majority in the House of Commons", she said in a sombre statement after returning from Buckingham Palace with permission to form a new government from Britain's Queen Elizabeth II.

EU President Donald Tusk urged Britain not to delay the talks, due to start on June 19, warning that time was running out to reach a divorce deal to end four decades of membership.

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn lost Britain's election, but his beaming smile and enthusiastic thumbs' up the morning after was the demeanor of a man who knew he was nevertheless the victor.

Voters failed to give a ringing endorsement to May's plan for Brexit, which involves leaving the EU's single market and imposing restrictions on immigration while trying to negotiate free trade deal with the bloc. There isn't a parliamentary majority for anybody at the present time, the party that has lost in this election is the Conservative Party, the arguments the Conservative Party put forward in this election have lost.

DUP Leader Arlene Foster recently denied the party was homophobic.

The alliance makes some modernizing Conservatives uneasy.

Conservative lawmaker Nicky Morgan told ITV that she could support a confidence and supply arrangement with the DUP, but any closer deal would be "a step too far".

The 1998 Good Friday agreement set up power sharing in Northern Ireland, largely ending years of sectarian violence.

A deal between the government and the DUP could also unsettle the precarious balance between Northern Ireland's British loyalist and Irish nationalist parties. The speech will be followed by several days of debate and a vote - and defeat would nearly certainly topple the government. By tradition, defeat on a Queen's Speech vote topples the government.

"I am backing Theresa May".

The party with the most female lawmakers is the opposition Labour party with almost half of its elected members of parliament (MPs) women, while the smaller Green Party's only elected MP is a woman.

On Twitter, Siegfried Muresan, spokesman for the European Parliament's largest grouping, the European People's Party, said, "EU did not want #Brexit, but has been prepared to negotiate it since a year ago". "This is still on".
