Britain, EU in suspense

Britain, EU in suspense

The Tories and the DUP are considering a "confidence and supply" arrangement which would see the Northern Irish party back the Government to get its Budget through and on confidence motions.

"It's a unity of objective, having voted to leave the European Union, that their government gets on with that and makes a success of it".

Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition Labour Party, which saw its parliamentary seats and share of the vote increase, said there could be another election this year or early in 2018 after Thursday's vote produced no clear victor. Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn has close ties to Sinn Fein and the Sinn Fein MPs are understood to be hoping that in return for their support, Mr. Corbyn would back a call for a referendum on Northern Ireland leaving the United Kingdom and joining Ireland.

The two parties might strike their own deal if Sinn Fein was offered a referendum on a united Ireland. Economists and business leaders worry that Britain's departure from the European Union could lead to the return of a border between Ireland and Northern Ireland. "They are the co-guarantors of the Good Friday Agreement".

A Conservative source said there was so far no deal to announce and that a decision on the timing of any announcement would only be made once an agreement is finalised.

Major said he feared the pact could undermine the fragile Northern Ireland peace process, which he was instrumental in brokering in its early days.

Sinn Fein officials have refused to comment on what their MPs will do.

Her failure to win a majority has put May under pressure over her Brexit plans from inside and outside her party and has prompted complaints about her choice of partner due to the DUP's stance on social issues such as gay marriage.

Talks with the DUP broke up on Tuesday night without an agreement, but Mrs May said the discussions had been "productive".

"I think it is very much doable to have a deal by the end of this month", she added. Free votes on all sorts of issues should be allowed. While post-Brexit Britain will remain an important export market for the EU-27, its isolation in Europe and loss of preferential access to the bloc's trading partners could have dramatic consequences. Ms Foster said the meeting with Mr Varadkar was useful and pleasant.

May held talks with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) on Tuesday in a bid to avoid another election.

Sinn Fein, the SDLP and Alliance have all made clear Northern Ireland Secretary James Brokenshire can not chair the ongoing process to restore power sharing at Stormont due to their perception he has a conflict of interest.

"The power-sharing institutions collapsed because of the DUP's RHI financial scandal and the refusal of previous Tory governments and the DUP to implement previous agreements".
