China Warns US Against Intervening in Nobel Prize Winner Liu's Case

Jailed Chinese Nobel Peace laureate and dissident Liu Xiaobo has been released on medical parole after being diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer, his lawyer said. "No country has a right to interfere and make irresponsible remarks".

Mr. Liu, a lecturer at Beijing Normal University, was a prominent figure during the student-led protests that swept Beijing and other Chinese cities in 1989.

He has no special plans.

The comment echoed a statement from the Norwegian Nobel Committee that expressed hope that Liu would be "released without conditions and offered the best possible treatment for his illness, whether it be in China or overseas".

"The Chinese government's culpability for wrongfully imprisoning Liu Xiaobo is deepened by the fact that they released him only when he became gravely ill", said Sophie Richardson, the China director at Human Rights Watch, said in an emailed statement.

"Liu Xiaobo has fought a relentless struggle in favor of democracy and human rights in China and has already paid a heavy price for his involvement", the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.

Liu, who has been under house arrest in Beijing, could not be reached for comment on the video, but a close friend, Ye Du, who was among the first to upload the footage, confirmed it was authentic.

Liu Xia, a poet, has been under house arrest since 2010, when her husband won the Nobel prize.

Hundreds of Chinese lawyers, activists and friends signed a petition calling on authorities to give Liu "complete freedom" and allow his wife to "have contact with the outside world". Relations were not normalized until last December.

In Hong Kong, about 70 supporters of Liu took to the streets to demand his immediate release on Tuesday, chanting slogans denouncing the Chinese government as a "murderer".

Supporters have called for Liu to be allowed to seek treatment overseas, although President Xi Jinping's administration has taken a hard line on refusing permission for dissidents to travel. Depending on the result, parole can be extended or the person sent back to prison to serve the rest of their sentence. An Associated Press journalist could not locate Liu in the sprawling facility, and nurses on likely floors for cancer patients said they had not had a patient by the name of Liu Xiaobo.

"The MAC has been concerned about mainland Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo's latest situation, hoping that he will get good medical attention so his family members can feel comfort", the MAC said. It called for Chinese political liberalization, and brought Liu a 15-year prison sentence for "inciting subversion of state power".

When asked about Liu's release, foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a regular news briefing: "I am not aware of the situation you're talking about". "Why was Liu Xiaobo only released when his cancer was in the terminal stages?"

Patrick Poon, a China researcher for Amnesty International, called on Chinese authorities to ensure that Liu receives adequate medical care and access to his family. She suffered a heart attack in 2014, when she was diagnosed with depression after years of detention, a rights group said at the time. "He is just receiving medical treatment for his illness", Mr Mo told AFP news agency.
