Donald Trump offers support to Theresa May after polls setback

"I just can't see how she can continue in any long-term way", Soubry said.

British Prime Minister Theresa May's failed gamble on a snap election throws Brexit - and the formal Brexit talks - into uncharted waters.

However other senior Tories - including Graham Brady, the influential chairman of the '22 - predicted MPs would rally round, insisting there was no mood in the party for a damaging leadership contest which could see them plunged into a fresh general election.

The result has demolished May's political authority, and she has also lost her two top aides, sacrificed in a bid to save their leader from being toppled by a furious Conservative Party.

The Prime Minister was forced to perform an unprecedented U-turn within days of the publication of the Tory manifesto by announcing that there would be a cap on social care costs, something that had been absent in the original policy document.

Mr. Corbyn has also called for a soft Brexit, saying Britain must remain in the European single market, which provides for the free flow of goods, services and people. Beleaguered May is appointing new members of her government after several. She left her cabinet largely intact on Sunday before a showdown with party legislators on Monday. All other senior Tory ministers refused media interviews.

"I said during the election campaign that if re-elected I would intend to serve a full term", she told reporters in No 10.

May said Friday she looks forward to working with "our friends and allies" in the DUP.

Steven Fielding, a professor of politics at the University of Nottingham, called her "a zombie prime minister".

Speaking on the steps of Downing Street, Mrs May said that despite having lost their majority in the Commons, only the Conservatives had the "legitimacy" to form a Government.

May will meet with DUP leader Arlene Foster in London on Tuesday as she seeks to secure the support of the party's 10 lawmakers for her programme, making up for the Tories' nine-seat shortfall in the Commons. Any Brexit deal must reflect the "specific circumstances of Northern Ireland", Foster has said.

The DUP said the election outcome had bolstered the union, but Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams said the collapse of Northern Ireland's middle-ground parties had made a referendum on Irish unity inevitable. "We will make our influence felt", its deputy leader, Nigel Dodds, confidently declared, as the party won ten of the 18 seats in Northern Ireland.

We can accept the logic of support for Brexit providing the glue that would keep a deal together between the Conservatives and the DUP.

Britain's best-selling Sun newspaper said senior members of her party had vowed to get rid of May, but would wait at least six months because they were anxious that a leadership contest now could propel Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn into power.

Numerous party members are also uncomfortable with the kind of deal that will have to be struck with the DUP, a socially conservative party that takes an opposing stance on issues such as abortion and same sex marriages.

Northern Ireland is the only part of the United Kingdom in which same-sex marriage is illegal.

Ms Davidson, who became engaged to partner Jen Wilson in May 2016, later told the BBC: "I was fairly straightforward with her (Mrs May) and I told her that there were a number of things that count to me more than the party".

"David Cameron tried to make that work and nobody was prepared to deal with him on that basis so I'm not sure that would be on the table".

Front and center among many questions facing May's new government is the matter of Brexit.

However Davidson replied on Twitter the report was "bollocks".

The strong showing by the Labour Party, which has advocated for closer ties with the European Union single market, is an indication the British are wary of breaking away sharply from the bloc.
