Gunman opens fire on members of Congress at park, later dies

But he did say the shooting is a symptom of the political rhetoric in the country today.

Hours after the shooting at a Virginia baseball field where Republican lawmakers were practicing, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy provided some details about the incident.

The president praised the "heroic actions" of the Capitol Police at the scene. He is in stable condition. And after all, a man did indeed ask one Republican member of Congress, Rep. Ron DeSantis, who was leaving the field, if those remaining at the park were Democrats or Republicans - and coincidence of all coincidences, the shooting broke out just three minutes later.

"A lot more members would have been hurt if they had not been there to return fire", he explained. Central time that the gunman, James T. Hodgkinson, is dead. He was taken to a hospital after the shooting. As the gunman and Capitol Police exchanged gunfire, Flake took cover in the dugout.

Both officers engaged the shooter with their sidearms, commanding him to drop his weapon as they returned fire. That includes the Capitol Police officers who sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Alexandria police said a suspect in the shooting was in custody and "not a threat".

"Authorities are continuing to investigate the crime and the assailant has now died from his injuries", he said.

At 9:45 a.m., he was on his way to a briefing on the shooting and as yet has no official comment, staff in his D.C. office said.

The President and Vice President have been briefed about the ongoing situation.

"My thoughts & prayers are with my friend @SteveScalise, our @CapitolPolice, and all who were harmed this morning in #Alexandria".

President Donald Trump said he was "deeply saddened by this tragedy" and was monitoring developments.

Trump says everyone can agree that we are "blessed to be Americans" and that we are strongest when "we work together for the common good". "We condemn this attack, and are thankful for the first responders, police and even other members of Congress for what they did to keep everyone as safe as possible during this bad situation". He added the FBI will be taking over the investigation. Officials do not plan on holding any more press conferences Wednesday.
