'Hate Is Living Every Day,' LeBron James Says After Racist Graffiti Incident

The graffiti, discovered on the front gate of James' multimillion-dollar home in the Los Angeles suburb of Brentwood, was a racial epithet, according to the Los Angeles Times, which quoted a police officer as saying it had already been painted over.

During the 2016 NBA Finals James carried the Cavs back from a 3-1 deficit, a performance that was no doubt aided by the fact that he did not need to grind out any long series earlier in the playoffs, logging just 530 minutes played while going 12-2 in the first three rounds. Jefferson, the LAPD officer, told CNN that they can not now say if the home was burgled.

The house isn't James' main residence, and he might have been forgiven for refusing to let vandalism distract him from competing for an National Basketball Association title. It just goes to show racism will always be part of the world, part of America. Instead, the Cavaliers star addressed the crime's social implications.

"Hate in America, especially for African Americans, is living every day", James said, "and even though it's concealed most of the time, even though people hide their faces and. when they see you will smile in your face, it's alive every day".

James said the incident made him think of the mother of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old African-American brutally murdered in MS in 1955, who gave her son an open casket because "she wanted to show the world what her son went through as far as a hate crime and being black in America".

"Having two sons, two sons that have great minds, they're very open to life and love life", James said. And you know but my family is safe and you know that's what's, that's what's important. "Hopefully, I give them enough life skills throughout their journey when they're ready to fly, they can fly on their own". His message is that at the end of the day, it's tough being Black in America, even for a multiple NBA MVP and champ.
