Kane rescues draw for England against Scotland in qualifying

The Three Lions took the lead on 70 minutes through substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain but Leigh Griffiths equalised with a free-kick on 87 minutes and then remarkably curled in another free-kick just three minutes later.

But in a breathless denouement, Tottenham Hotspur striker Kane dispatched a deep cross at the back post to preserve England's unbeaten record in Group F and deny Scotland a first win since 1999 over their oldest rivals.

Kane scored his first goal for England since May 2016, after a run of 575 minutes without one.

Scotland's Kieran Tierney was playing with a gum shield but his foot came to the rescue when he cleared an effort from Harry Kane.

I gave Alan Shearer the captaincy when I was England manager because I felt, and still feel, it is a different role to being captain of your club side.

Scotland boss Gordon Strachan has stressed that brains not brawn will have to be deployed against England at Hampden Park on Saturday.

Scotland nearly shot themselves in the foot when Gordon rushed off his line and the goalkeeper's poor header fell to Kane, whose lob was nodded away by Kieran Tierney and Marcus Rashford's follow-up was deflected wide.

Lallana produced some good skill in the 40th minute when he collected a Kane pass and burst into the area but his strike from a tight angle was tipped behind by Gordon.

The tone was the same on the pitch, with Scotland captain Scott Brown booked inside three minutes for taking out England danger man Dele Alli from behind.

Livermore went even closer early in the second half with a low shot that was deflected against the base of Gordon's left-hand post.

The ball then fell invitingly to Alli but he couldn't sort his feet out quickly enough to get the shot off and was closed down. Griffiths delivered. This time curling the ball the other side of Hart, Scotland fans were cast into delirium.

England nearly went in front out of the blue in the 67th minute when Ryan Bertrand's cross from the left was met by the head of Kane but Gordon produced a fine reaction save to deny him.

Brown soon avoided a second yellow card for a late challenge on Alli and Lallana missed two chances to settle matters, heading over and having an effort saved.

Southgate reacted by sending on Oxlade-Chamberlain for Rashford in the 65th minute and five minutes later, the Arsenal man put England ahead.

He said: "If I score maybe a hat-trick at the weekend and a couple in the next game, the ratio might not look so bad".

But that was just the start of the mayhem, as Griffiths stepped up in the 90th minute to bend in another world-class free-kick.

The drama was not finished, though, as Kane - wearing the armband in place of the absent Wayne Rooney - met Raheem Sterling's swinging cross to silence the home fans.
