Kansas City Chiefs release Jeremy Maclin after two seasons

The Kansas City Chiefs, held up tight against the salary cap made a decision to move on from wide receiver Jeremy Maclin.

Maclin signed with the Chiefs as a free agent in March 2015 following five seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, and he thrived throughout his first year upon reuniting with head coach Andy Reid.

Reid added that he respected how Maclin goes about what he does and how professional he is in handling himself. He had caught 85 passes for a career-best 1,318 yards and 10 touchdowns, earning a spot in his first Pro Bowl.

Oakland may have almost $32 million in salary cap room per Over the Cap, but they also have yet to sign two of the best players (at the most expensive positions) in the National Football League in defensive end Khalil Mack and quarterback Derek Carr respectively this offseason. The other part of the fit was that the receiver was born in Kirkwood, Mo., and played his college ball at the University of Missouri, so the move to Kansas City was essentially a trip home for Maclin. In all, he has 474 catches for 6,395 yards (13.5 avg.) with 46 touchdowns. "I wish him the best of luck moving forward".

On the flip side, the release of Maclin results in $7 million in dead money.

"Absolutely, I think about it a lot", said Smith, who took some accountability for Maclin's drop in production.

"We've both been playing a long time and been around this a long time, so I can get it and you say it is a business and all that". We were so close (last season). Overpay him for one or two years if you're one of those teams with huge cap space.

Maclin now becomes one of the top wide receivers currently without a job, along with Anquan Boldin and Vincent Jackson.

"I appreciate so many teammates coming and helping us celebrate our big day", Maclin said. "I've never been a stat guy". Rookie Tyreek Hill was dynamic as a rookie last season, leading the wide receivers in receptions with 61 and six touchdowns.

The Chiefs waited until the fourth round to select a wide receiver, Michigan's Jehu Chesson, in April's draft.
