Lewis Hamilton receives Ayrton Senna crash helmet in Canada

Hamilton now only trails Michael Schumacher (68) for all-time poles in F1, and was awarded a race-worn helmet by the Senna family in the minutes following qualifying, leaving the Briton stunned. Mercedes, meanwhile, continue to show they have the edge over Ferrari over a single lap - the team have secured the top spot in five of the seven meetings this season - but Ferrari have good race pace, with their straight-line speed looking to be more than a match for their rivals'.

Raikkonen's time of one minute 12.935 seconds was 0.215 seconds quicker than two-time defending champion Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes AMG.

That marked the end of any fast running, with attentions turning to race programmes, with Vettel and Hamilton getting under each other's feet - the German complained about the Brit deliberately holding him up.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, of Great Britain, takes a turn at the Senna corner during the third practice session at the F1 Canadian Grand Prix auto race, Saturday, June 10, 2017, in Montreal. The Ferraris finished one-two in the same order at the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks ago.

Hamilton and Bottas then opted to put on the ultrasoft compound and were chopping down their times lap after lap.

"They were so quick and they've been quick all year".

Hamilton found over 0.3s in his final run, having previously been just 0.004s faster than Vettel on their first flying laps.

After being handed one of Senna's race helmets, Hamilton said: "I'm shaking".

The Englishman's team mate Valtteri Bottas had some scruffy runs, grazing a wall on his way to a 1m 13.210s best which was eventually rendered fifth fastest by the superb Verstappen, who took his RB13 round on the ultrasofts in 1m 12.965s.

"I thought we could step it up and find a bit of time". But I lost the auto a bit in Turn 2 and was on the back foot already, and knew I had to catch up, but he had enough. Hulkenberg did well to emerge in 10th ahead of Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat, but the Russian driver's flying lap ended with a thump at Turn 8 and he limped home with a heavily damaged right rear tyre. You can only hope and imagine that it's going to go well and sometimes it doesn't, but the lap started beautifully, and I just built it, smoothly, no mistakes.

Stoffel Vandoorne finished just on the wrong side of the cusp in his McLaren-Honda - 0.130secs off Sainz and a place in Q2.

Lance Stroll will start his first home Grand Prix down in 17th after another disappointing afternoon but the day belongs to Hamilton as he equals his boyhood hero.
