May, Corbyn clash over Brexit plans with UK vote 1 week away

A Corbyn victory on June 8 would have "a hugely negative impact on our economy", she claimed.

Betting that she would win a strong majority, May called the snap election to strengthen her position at home as she embarked on complicated Brexit negotiations with 27 other members of the European Union.

"Britain deserves to see the only two people who could be the next Prime Minister debate", Corbyn tweeted the morning of the event in a last-minute effort to persuade May to attend.

Labour success appears to be grounded particularly among younger voters: "these have always been more inclined to support Labour than the Conservatives, but the Labour advantage among 18-24 year old voters in our latest poll is running at approximately three-to-one".This provoked Jim Messina, May's U.S. consultant, to tweet that he had spent the day "laughing at another stupid poll from YouGov" and offering a charity bet that they had got it wrong. One YouGov polling projection showed May could lose seats.

With a week to go to polling, the Prime Minister sought to revive the Conservatives' faltering General Election campaign with the promise of a brighter future for Britain outside the EU. "The country is coming together but Westminster is not", she said at the time. "Honestly, things are going from bad to worse", she said.

Another Tory activist, Ian Ferguson, said his father-in-law-a lifelong Labour voter-had been ready to switch to May before the social care row.

Guisborough is in the parliamentary seat of Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, a Conservative target.

Flanked by his Brexit negotiating team Keir Starmer, Barry Gardiner and Emily Thornberry, he addressed hundreds of supporters at The Place in Pitsea.

In the speech at CJ Leonard & Sons, May emphasized her plans to improve skills for young people-although the boss's daughter was not impressed.

He said the Tories are "weak and wobbly" and can not be believed after the PM's U-turn on her controversial social care reforms and her failure to set out how many pensioners stand to lose their winter fuel payments - policies that have been widely credited as a factor in the narrowing of the polls.

Jeremy Corbyn is to announce plans to pump £250 billion into industry in a bid to create a million good quality jobs and unleash "the untapped potential of every part of the country".

"A Britain beyond Brexit that is more global and outward-looking".

As bored children on their half-term break rode their bikes up and down the street, youth worker Ricky Tomlinson made smoothies at a Caribbean-style stall.

"I think that he's quite honest".

The prospect of a hung parliament has been forced to the forefront of the election debate by a series of YouGov polls suggesting Labour is within three points of overhauling Theresa May's Conservatives, who started the campaign with an opinion poll advantage of as much as 25 points.

"People are saying Jeremy is a strong leader, and he is-he's got integrity and he's got principles and that is certainly coming across", she said.
