Megyn Kelly's much ballyhooed interview with Alex Jones was a ratings catastrophe

Megyn Kelly's much ballyhooed interview with Alex Jones was a ratings catastrophe

The episode finally aired Sunday, averaging 3.5 million viewers, a 0.5 rating among adults 18-49 and a 0.7 rating among adults 25-54.

"Megyn Kelly Presses Alex Jones on Conspiracy Theories in Edited NBC Interview", read the initial New York Times headline on the interview, still visible in a tweet. Her second episode, however, dipped down to 3.6 million viewers and was dwarfed by competitor 60 Minutes - despite the fact that NBC paired the show with a winning Stanley Cup final.

Unfortunately, the segment's very important message-about the dangers of giving disproportionate attention to self-aggrandizing ideologues who view making damaging claims about dead children as a form of satirical, "devil's advocate" performance art, and/or why we should do it this time-didn't make much of an impact outside of anyone's confirmation biases.

"Sunday Night" has seen a steady decline in its viewership since Kelly's debut episode, which was set around an exclusive interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

On Father's Day evening, ABC's repeat episode of "America's Funniest Home Videos" (AFHV) outperformed NBC's "Megyn Kelly", the subject of a firestorm of controversy due to interview subject Alex Jones, Entertainment Weekly reported Monday.

NBC noted Kelly's radioactive interview, which had been a top media story for days, outdelivered CBS's 60 Minutes rerun in the demo. It was pre-empted in Hartford-New Haven out of consideration for the Newtown community, as Jones has called the Sandy Hook murders a hoax.

Jones runs the website InfoWars, which has propagated narratives like Sandy Hook and 9/11 are hoaxes without evidence.

A parent of one of the victims also spoke out.

Nicole Hockley's 6-year-old son, Dylan, was among the 20 children and six educators killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

To her credit, Kelly was aggressive in her questioning of Jones' public comments during the segment itself, which drew from hours of sit-down conversations with Jones.

Maybe the ratings were hurt by the pre-airing publicity, maybe Jones' audio leak of the interview had an effect.
