Netanyahu: Israel to keep security control over West Bank

Israeli government minister Michael Oren, a former ambassador to the United States, rejected a report that Israel was prepared to detonate a nuclear bomb in the Sinai Peninsula if necessary to win the Six-Day War with its Arab neighbors.

A year later, the state of Israel was established, but almost seven decades on, Palestinians are still struggling for independence. Israelis claim the whole of the city as their exclusive capital while Palestinians want to make East Jerusalem their capital.

Sources reported that during a closed-door meeting between Israeli and Palestinian officials last week, Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah said Israel's policy of containment in the West Bank prevented the tensions that began in October 2015 from turning into a third intifada.

After fifty years, the disastrous Pyrrhic repercussions of this military victory are intensifying as the occupation of the West Bank solidifies both on the ground and in the minds of many Israelis, Palestinians, and their leaders.

He did not specifically mention the two-state solution, long the focus of worldwide efforts and US Middle East diplomacy. Thus, it had taken control of the final 22 per cent of historic Palestine that it wasn't able to occupy in 1948.

Israel returned the Sinai to Egypt as part of a landmark 1979 peace agreement. "We are creating state institutions". One of the regulars, Israeli contractor Ariel Schneider, believes Palestinians don't need a state.

"They know it (a flourishing economy) will strengthen our position in negotiations" on a two-state deal, said Bamya, a lead researcher in the Aix Group, an Israeli-Palestinian economic think-tank. On Saturday, May 27th, 15,000 Israelis rallied in Tel Aviv to call for two states.

APN is the sister organization of Shalom Achshav, Israel's preeminent peace movement. Palestinians say the barrier is also a land grab because for long stretches it runs in the West Bank, not on the pre-1967 frontier, slicing off about 10 per cent of the land.
