Otto Warmbier has 'severe neurological injury' after detainment in North Korea

Otto Warmbier has 'severe neurological injury' after detainment in North Korea

Otto Warmbier was in coma when he was released Tuesday, and he was taken to the neuroscience intensive care unit at UCMC in Ohio. Otto Warmbier has a severe neurological injury, doctors say.

"We don't believe anything they say". "North Korea doesn't do anything out of the kindness of their heart". Warmbier said recently, they made a decision to go public with their situation and shortly thereafter, Otto was home.

Pyongyang officials have said Warmbier fell into a coma after contracting botulism and taking a sleeping pill. The earliest images of his brain they received from North Korea are dated April 2016, Kanter said.

"He doesn't deserve this", Fred Warmbier told The Cincinnati Enquirer in an interview last month.

The Warmbiers are happy to have their son back alive, even though he is unable to respond because of his comatose state.

Rodman was asked by reporters Tuesday if he would bring up the cases of Warmbier and three other Americans detained in North Korea.

Otto Warmbier is in stable condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with his mother by his side, hospital spokeswoman Kelly Martin said.

'Otto is not in great shape right now, ' Fred Warmbier told Fox News Wednesday after his son arrived back in the U.S. on a military airplane and was taken straight to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for urgent treatment. They did not find evidence of broken bones or other physical trauma, and they said Warmbier's brain injury was not consistent with a beating.

"We relied on this false premise that they would treat Otto fairly and let him go", Fred Warmbier said. The State Department secured his release and return to the United States, but his parents said that Otto was in a coma. Warmbier said the family was "extremely grateful for their efforts and concern".

The New York Times quoted a senior US official as saying Washington received intelligence reports that Warmbier had been repeatedly beaten in custody.

Go Myong-Hyun, a researcher at the Asian Institute for Policy Studies, told Agence France-Presse that it was unlikely North Korea would have intentionally put a detained U.S. citizen - valuable diplomatic bargaining chips for Pyongyang - into a coma. When asked about his son's condition, he replied, "We are making him comfortable".

Voice breaking and tears in his eyes, the father noted he was wearing the same off-white jacket his son had worn during his North Korean court appearance, adding he was "proud" of his son's adventurous spirit.
