Scalise on the mend, now in 'serious' condition

Top Republican politician Steve Scalise's condition has been upgraded from critical to serious after he was gunned down at a party baseball practice outside Washington. "The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers", the hospital's statement said.

Congressman Steve Scalise has improved following another round of surgeries and is speaking with loved ones, hospital officials said Saturday.

Supporters of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., hold signs before the Congressional baseball game, Thursday, June 15, 2017, in Washington.

Several other people were also injured in Wednesday's shooting before Scalise's security detail and other police officers gunned down the assailant, who later died.

Law enforcement officials have said they found a list of Republican lawmakers' names on the body of James Hodgkinson, who apparently had been in the Washington area for several months stalking his targets.

Scalise, facing "an imminent risk of death", was rushed to the hospital in a helicopter. This person was not authorized to speak publicly about the case and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Two sources close to the congressman's family said medical staff removed a tube that had been inserted into Scalise's abdomen to prevent fluid from going into his lungs while being sedated, The Baton Rouge Advocate reported.

Scalise and other Republican congressmen were practicing at the time for an annual game between Democratic and Republican legislators that raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity.

Nonetheless, said Sava, "we fully expect him to be able to walk" and "hopefully run". "However, Scalise will certainly be in the hospital for a considerable period of time, presumably weeks".

Two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House Republican aide Zack Barth, were also injured in the shooting. Griner remained hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition.

MedStar said in a statement Friday that Scalise was in critical condition but had showed signs of improvement.
