Scalise upgraded from 'critical' to 'serious' condition

The American Hospital Association defines "critical" condition as: "Vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits".

Scalise was in dire condition when he was shot at the Congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday.

Scalise was one of several people shot by suspect James T. Hodgkinson ― a 66-year-old resident of IL ― who targeted a GOP team baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday.

Colleagues who visited Scalise, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, sounded generally upbeat, but spoke more in terms of hopes than the confident predictions of the immediate aftermath a day earlier.

The source said investigators were not sure of the significance of the names and did not know if it was a list of people Hodgkinson was targeting.

"He is more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones", MedStar Washington Hospital said in an email Saturday.

The president said that because of the "tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified".

Scalise suffered a rifle wound in his left hip that shattered bones, tore organs and caused severe bleeding. "The doctor added, however, that Scalise will certainly be in the hospital for a considerable period of time, presumably weeks".

Lobbyist Matt Mika, who was shot several times and critically wounded, has undergone additional surgery and doctors expect a full recovery, his family said. Also hurt but released from hospitals were two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House GOP aide Zack Barth. The shooter was an IL man, James T. Hodgkinson, who had lashed out against President Trump and Republicans over social media.

Ms Griner remains in hospitali at MedStar after being shot in the ankle and Mr Bailey was spotted on Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.

In a statement, Mika's family said he would remain in the intensive care unit at George Washington University Hospital at least through the weekend.

Steve Scalise's condition has been upgraded to "serious" after he underwent surgery Saturday for injuries sustained in the shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice Wednesday, the hospital treating him said in a release.
