Shropshire and Mid Wales politicians welcome Conservative-DUP pact

Shropshire and Mid Wales politicians welcome Conservative-DUP pact

The deal comes almost three weeks after the general election resulted in May losing her majority and a hung Parliament, as reported in The Planner.

DUP leader Arlene Foster said the "wide-ranging" agreement was "good for Northern Ireland and for the UK".

The deal, which comes two weeks after the election resulted in a hung Parliament, will see the 10 DUP MPs back the Tories in key Commons votes.

LGBT activists in Northern Ireland are hopeful the controversial deal between the Tories and the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) could change the latter's views on gay rights.

Jeremy Corbyn - leader of the U.K.'s Labour Party - criticized the deal with the DUP, which he said amounted to nothing more than a desperate power grab by May.

Denouncing the "grubby" deal with the DUP, Mr Blackford said: "For years the Tories have been cutting budgets and services, but suddenly they have found a magic money tree to help them stay in power". A parallel was drawn with money for city deals. In response, the UK Government will contribute £75 million each year for two years to help provide ultra-fast broadband for Northern Ireland.

Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones of the main opposition Labour Party called the deal "outrageous" and "unacceptable" and said the money was a "bung" to keep a weakened prime minister in office.

It applauded the government for recognising the need to "examine how Northern Ireland's businesses are impacted by the UK's high rates of tourism Value-Added Tax".

Under the agreement the DUP will support bills and initiatives put forth by May's minority Conservative government, giving her an effective majority in Parliament.

"It sees us now in a situation where thanks to the pretty calamitous decisions of two Conservative prime ministers, we're in one hell of a mess", he told reporters.

Downing Street has said that as the allocation is being made as part of the block grant to Northern Ireland, there will be no consequentials through the Barnett formula, the mechanism used to distribute Treasury funds to the devolved nations.

Northern Ireland has been in crisis since Sinn Fein pulled out of government in January, prompting an election in March and a series of missed deadlines to restore the compulsory coalition between Irish Catholic nationalists and pro-British Protestant unionists.

The leaders of all the main political parties in Northern Ireland are expected to be involved in round-table discussions on Tuesday.

Of course, the DUP has engaged in a power-sharing deal (of sorts) in Westminster too.

The Tory-DUP deal is "normal politics" and "good for everybody in Northern Ireland", according to a DUP MP.
