SpaceX successfully launches satellite from Kennedy Space Center

The mission on Friday was to delivery Bulgaria's first ever geostationary communications satellite into orbit, so that it could begin operations broadcast communication networks and HDTV signals for clients on Earth in parts of Europe.

The first stage of that Falcon 9 rocket is also expected to come in for a landing on a different drone ship in the Pacific Ocean after launch. Just incase the rocket's takeoff does not go well the launch window reopens at 2:10PM ET Tomorrow.

The launch was the start of a busy weekend for SpaceX.

After the BulgariaSat-1 mission, the next in line is a June 25 launch of 10 satellites for Iridium Communications Inc from Vandenberg Air Force Base on California's central coast. But Musk is trying to lower the cost of space travel by getting his rockets to land on autonomous platforms floating in the ocean; SpaceX has spent at least $1 billion developing these capabilities, according to Quartz. The Ku-band satellite will provide television programming across the Balkans. Musk said SpaceX will gift that history-making booster to the Kennedy Space Center. After touchdown the booster was secured on the Droneship deck and transported to the Los Angeles port, where it was lifted by a crane, had its landing legs removed and sent directly to Florida for its next flight. The booster was previously used in a January mission. A pre-flown Dragon delivered cargo to the International Space Station earlier this month, and will depart the orbiting lab (for the second time) in early July. It's the 12th time SpaceX has successfully landed one of these rocket stages, and the seventh time it's performed the feat at sea. Evidence has also emerged in the last few weeks that SpaceX heavily undercuts the United Launch Alliance in overall pricing, though this was generally suspected given public information and known cost structures.

Falcon 9 will launch the Bulgarian satellite from LC-39A pad, home of the historic Apollo and Space Shuttle programs.

Shortly before, SpaceX had run ground system checks and confirmed that both the rocket and the payload, meaning the satellite, had been in "good health". Kudos to Musk and SpaceX for another successful launch and recovery, even if the landing was a bit rough.
