Spanish state prosecutor accuses Jose Mourinho of tax fraud

Jose Mourinho now manages Manchester United.

Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic is reportedly keen on a reunion with Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, as he looks set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer. In his 2011 and 2012 tax returns, he is alleged to have failed to declare earnings from his image rights, which prosecutors say he did "with the intention of obtaining illegal benefit".

The Portuguese manager owes Spanish tax authorities 3.3 million euros (about 2.91 million pounds or N1.46 billion), a Madrid prosecutor said in a statement.

Jose Mourinho is facing allegations of tax fraud in Spain worth almost £3 million.

Real Madrid did not respond to requests for comment on the allegations against Mourihno or Ronaldo's hearing.

Ronaldo, also from Portugal, has been summoned to testify in his case on July 31.

Mourinho is said to have knowingly used a business structure to hide the money he earned from his image rights.

Despite starting out as a substitute as Mourinho tried the best formation to suit Paul Pogba, he slowly won over his manager with his tenacious displays and leadership ability.

The accusations against Mourinho come just a week after Spanish authorities accused Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo of tax fraud, worth £12.9 million.

The Madrid prosecutor's office said Ronaldo, 32, used a "business structure" he created in 2010 to shelter income he received from image rights in the Virgin Islands from 2011 to 2014. They have been given a jail term of 21 months, although it is highly unlikely that the Argentina captain will serve any time behind bars, according to to Spanish law.

Lionel Messi was past year convicted of defrauding the Spanish state in unpaid taxes on image rights.

Mascherano was also convicted of tax fraud last year and was given a suspended one-year sentence.
