Special counsel investigating Trump for possible obstruction of justice

"I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!"

Mueller III to investigate Trump's own conduct marks a major turning point in the almost year-old FBI investigation, which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. "FBI director" James Comey in a tweet Friday morning, once again calling the investigation a "witch hunt".

Significantly, Preet Bharara, the India-born former top U.S. federal prosecutor, earlier this week had said that there was enough evidence to begin an obstruction of justice case against Trump over his alleged interference in the Russian Federation probe.

Trump has said he is "100 per cent" willing to testify under oath on Comey meetings and tell the FBI Special Consul Robert Muller that he never asked FBI to stop investigating. He instead told the Washington Post: "The FBI leak of information regarding the President is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal". (That doesn't mean they won't do exactly that, of course.) We are now talking about the President of the United States being investigated for possibly obstructing justice in relation to a criminal probe about a foreign government meddling in our elections for the goal of defeating his Democratic opponent.

"The interviews (with Rogers, Coats and Ledgett) suggest that Mueller sees the question of attempted obstruction of justice as more than just a "he said, he said" dispute between the President and the fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director, an official said". The "smoking gun" that did in President Nixon, in the end, was a tape that revealed he ordered his chief of staff to get the Central Intelligence Agency to stop the FBI's investigation into the Watergate break-ins, as Dylan Matthews explains. But Rosenstein, too, may ultimately have to hand off oversight of the probe given his own role in Comey's firing.

It is unclear whether Ledgett had direct contact with Trump or other top officials about the Russian Federation probe, but he wrote an internal NSA memo documenting the president's phone call with Rogers, according to officials. No longer is he merely focused on Moscow's efforts to interfere in the 2016 election, meaning he also appears to be zeroing in on Trump's actions since taking office on January 20. The White House has denied any collusion.

The letter said the investigation will also probe Comey's testimony that Loretta Lynch, as President Barack Obama's attorney general, had directed him to describe an FBI probe into Hillary Clinton's email practices as merely a "matter" and to avoid calling it an investigation. "Sad!" he wrote in one post.

Mueller has not publicly discussed his work, and a spokesman for the special counsel declined to comment. But the Post story is the first clearly stated report that he is in fact doing so - a potentially ominous development for the president. They are Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager; Rick Gates, Manafort's business partner; Carter Page, a former foreign policy adviser; Flynn; and Roger J. Stone Jr., an informal adviser to Mr. Trump.

Flynn, dismissed by Trump in February after it emerged he had misled Pence about conversations with the Russian ambassador, is a subject in investigations by intelligence committees in the House of Representatives and Senate, as well as the FBI.
