Tom Cruise reveals 'Top Gun 2' to start filming soon

"It's an iconic that [Cruise] helped create, so I think we would like to see what happened to Maverick for the last 30 years", Bruckheimer added.

Mumbai: The 54-year-old-actor confirmed that a sequel to the 1986 classic "Top Gun" is happening and might start filming "probably in the next year".

"Top Gun" was the top grossing movie in theaters in 1986, according to Box Office Mojo, making $179.8 million. Yes, the borderline mythical Top Gun 2 motion picture is officially on its way after years of chatter.

"Top Gun 2 is about Maverick returning to the Navy because he's the only one who can get an old version of powerpoint to work", one user wrote on Twitter.

On Tuesday morning, Cruise finally confirmed that the rumours were indeed true.

Bruckheimer's decades-long quest for the sequel seemed to get jet boosters in January 2016 after he tweeted a photo of himself with Cruise when they met to discuss the project. The movie also snapped up an Oscar for Best Original Song. Previous year the action star shared a photo of him and producer Jerry Bruckheimer with a caption that suggested they were talking about the possibility of filming Top Gun 2. While promoting Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation in July, Cruise spoke with cautious optimism about the sequel, saying: "If we can figure it out, it would be fun to do".

The actor said filming will likely begin within the next year.

"It's true. It's true", he continued during his promotional trail for upcoming action fantasy film, The Mummy.
