Trump and Modi hold first talks at White House

"I guess it's worked very well in both cases", Mr Trump said. "There was no big idea in the relationship", Tewari said.

Trump said both countries have been struck by the "evils of terrorism", and are determined to destroy terrorist organizations and the radical ideology that drives them.

The apparently jovial tone was in contrast to what had been predicted to be a tough meeting.

Modi, a Hindu nationalist but also leader of a nation with almost 175 million Muslims, did not use the same, charged terminology. It's a great honour to welcome the leader of the world's largest democracy to the White House.

Modi also planned to press the case for the H-1B visa program, which is disproportionately used by Indians working in the technology industry.

Trump has so far focused on outreach to China, India's other strategic rival, as he looks to Beijing to rein in nuclear-armed North Korea.

Trump accused India of receiving "billions" of dollars in return for signing the accord, an allegation that India strongly refuted. Often when a top US official makes a joint statement with their foreign contemporary, both leaders will take two questions each.

Seeking to downplay concerns, Modi suggested the economic growth was not a zero-sum game.

"Ties between India and Netherlands are very old".

"In this regard, the visit of Prime Minister is singular success which was reflected in the joint media briefing made by the two leaders", he said. "Fears that Trump would not be an ally to India, like at least three of his predecessors, have proved unfounded".

While both leaders stressed the importance of their bilateral relationship, Trump noted that he looks forward to working with Modi to create a trading relationship that is "fair and reciprocal", urging the prime minister to do more to narrow the US trade deficit with India.

"I am here to speak for the Indian church", said Bishop John Lutembeak, a missionary in India, "The Indians who are being persecuted by Prime Minister Mohdi, by a group of radical Hindus".

Modi also announced increased cooperation on fighting terrorism, including enhanced sharing of intelligence. Such moves are likely to be welcomed by USA foreign policy chiefs, who have underlined the need for additional information sharing in the ongoing fight against ISIS.

Prime Minister Rutte said the bonds between India and The Netherlands goes back to 1947 and these relations have become stronger over the years. Both the leaders discussed challenges of terrorism, extremism and radicalization. Above all, these objectives include combating terrorist threats, promoting stability across the Indo-Pacific region, increasing free and fair trade, and strengthening energy linkages. India has been concerned about the Hizbul for years.

The surplus with United States is India's largest with a trading partner. They did not take questions.

The Washington Post also reported that first daughter Ivanka Trump will be traveling to India to attend an entrepreneurship summit, on the heels of a controversial Fox & Friends interview during which she said, "I try to stay out of politics". Trump's "America First" slogan echoes Modi's own "Make in India" campaign.

"Alone development or good governance can not fulfill aspirations, a combination of both is required", PM Modi said.
