Trump says '100 percent' willing to respond to Comey under oath

Trump's private attorney, Marc Kasowitz, seized on the admission, casting the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director as one of the "leakers" set on undermining the Trump administration.

Testifying one month after Trump fired him, Comey said he lost his job because of the FBI's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 USA election. "Those were lies, plain and simple", Comey said. The House intelligence committee said Friday it requested an answer from the White House counsel by June 23. Mr Comey says he repeated that assurance in two subsequent meetings. He also said he didn't ask Comey to drop an investigation of Flynn.

The early morning tweet was Trump's first response to Comey's testimony Thursday before a Senate committee in which he accused the president of lies and defamation.

"Maybe sometime in the future people will learn whether or not there were recordings of his conversation with Comey", Trump added.

As noted on Twitter, by saying Comey lied under oath in this tweet, the president is accusing the former FBI Director of committing perjury. "What's most important is that investigators in the Senate and at the Department of Justice get all the facts and find the truth", Murphy said. President, this is wrong. You know that, I know that, everybody knows that.

"I don't understand why the president just doesn't clear up the matter once and for all", she told CNN.

"No, I didn't say that", Trump said at a press conference at the White House on Friday.

"Lordy", he said, "I hope there are tapes".

REP. NANCY PELOSI, D-Calif., House Minority Leader: I think there's no question he abused power. "I really don't know". "But we will come out bigger and better and stronger than ever, you watch".

Trump made the remarks while responding to questions on Comey's explosive testimony in which he accused the president of trying to stop a probe into the alleged Russian interference in the U.S. elections previous year.

Trump's outside counsel Marc Kasowitz claimed later Thursday that it was an "unauthorized disclosure of privileged information" that "appears to be entirely retaliatory". "We will leave it to the appropriate authorities to determine whether this leaks [sic] should be investigated along with all those others being investigated". "Yesterday showed no collusion, no obstruction". Mark Warner, leading Democrat on the committee.

So far there is no evidence that tapes of Comey and Trump's conversations actually exist outside of the White House, creating an air of mystery around the idea and distracting from the many already damning allegations around the Trump administration.

Comey confirmed to lawmakers he told Trump three times he was not personally being investigated.
