'Trump's climate claims on China, India false'

Responding to President Donald Trump's decision to pull the United States out of the Paris climate agreement, the European Union is considering taking economic measures that could include halting trade talks, forging closer ties with Russian Federation, and imposing heavy carbon taxes on U.S. exports.

A majority of Americans in every state, or 69 percent of U.S. voters, believe the United States should participate in the agreement, according to a recent opinion poll carried out by Yale University's program on climate change communication.

The rally in support of Trump's decision was organized by the Fairfax County Republican Committee and the Republican Party of Virginia, and it was also touted by the Trump-Pence campaign. In a press release, the foundation states it will also work with other governments and philanthropies that may be interested in supporting the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at this critical time.

"We are convinced that the implementation of the Paris Agreement offers substantial economic opportunities for prosperity and growth in our countries and on a global scale", the three leaders said.

"Strong transatlantic ties are far more important and far more durable than the latest unfortunate decisions of the new administration", Tusk said.

New York City is joined by several other American states and localities in vowing to uphold the previous American commitment to reach the goals laid out in the Paris agreements.

Prime Minister Modi said India is committed to protect the climate, irrespective of the Paris agreement.

Macron called Trump's decision not to honor the Paris agreement a "mistake" and ruled out of any renegotiation.

Robert Orr, one of the architects of the Paris accord and a former special advisor to the UN secretary general on climate change, told AFP that the United States had already been on track to achieve about half its Paris reductions commitment. Bloomberg also believes that "non-state actors" will be able to meet the United Nations emissions target without the federal government's help.

"If this coalition broadens and deepens at the pace that it appears to be, I think the Trump effect could be more than mitigated", added Orr, now dean of the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland.

"We here in New York City are shocked at the development this week in Washington, D.C., to see the president of the United States pull out of the Paris accord and literally set this nation, and the whole globe, on the path of denial", Mr DeBlasio said.

"We deem the momentum generated in Paris in December 2015 irreversible and we firmly believe that the Paris Agreement can not be renegotiated since it is a vital instrument for our planet, societies and economies", the leaders of the three countries said in a rare joint statement.
