Venus Williams the 2017 French Open champ? Why not?

Venus Williams the 2017 French Open champ? Why not?

The pregnant tennis icon, 35, brought her baby bump to cheer on older sister, Venus Williams, at Roland Garros during the French Open on Friday.

Venus Williams has lost in the fourth round of the French Open to 30th-seeded Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland, meaning the tournament will produce a first-time Grand Slam champion.

Muguruza, who was seeded No. 4 in Paris, beat Serena Williams in the French Open final past year. The Swiss was able to capitalize on Venus' errors and rode her momentum into the final set, where she closed out the match after two hours and 15 minutes.

The naysayers will say that it has been nine years since she last won it, which was also the most recent of her seven Grand Slam crowns.

"I'm sorry that I stopped her, I mean, yeah, her dream".

"I'm really pleased with how we played today and excited to be in the position we are now". Victoria Azarenka, a two-time grand slam victor and former world No. 1, had a baby boy past year when she was 27 and will return to competition next month during the grass-court season.

The result will see the 2015 semi-finalist take on home favourite Kristina Mladenovic, after she beat defending champion Garbine Muguruza. Serena is on maternity leave, Petra Kvitova is in the early stages of her return from hand injuries and Victoria Azarenka is likely not to be fully back as she returns from the birth of her first child. "I think sometimes clay can be tricky", she said after her third-round win.

The last repeat women's champion at Roland Garros remains Justine Henin, who won the tournament three consecutive years from 2005-07. "I think for me, it's a positive to be able to play three hours". No one likes losing, let alone someone who has been as great a champion as she has, and especially not when this year's French Open draw is so wide open. Bacsinszky looks for her fourth career grand slam quarterfinal.

"I love you, too", Mladenovic told the chanting crowd after the win. That's why we are working so hard, to be able to play these matches.

Pliskova will next face Paraguay's Veronica Cepede Royg, who beat Mariana Duque-Marino of Colombia 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3. If I want something from one of my sisters, I say baby Venus baby Lyn or Baby Isha needs it. The 26-year-old Martic upset 17th-seeded Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia 6-1, 6-1 in one of four women's third-round singles matches washed out by rain on Saturday.

Two other Kiwi doubles specialists, Artem Sitak and Marcus Daniell, were both eliminated from the grand slam tournament in the first round.
