Wallace To Become First Black Driver In Cup Race Since 2006

Wallace To Become First Black Driver In Cup Race Since 2006

When Darrell "Bubba" Wallace Jr. climbs into the iconic Richard Petty Motorsports No. 43 auto this weekend at Pocono Raceway, he will become the first African-American driver to compete in NASCAR's Cup Series since Bill Lester in 2006.

Wallace is fourth in the NASCAR Xfinity Series standings for Roush Fenway Racing, which will suspend operations of his Xfinity auto because of a lack of funding after this weekend at Pocono.

On Sunday, Wallace will pilot Richard Petty Motorsports' famed No. 43 vehicle in the Pocono 400, as Aric Almirola recovers from a back injury suffered in a May 13 crash at Kansas Speedway.

He is set to become the first African-American driver to race at NASCAR's top level since 2006, starting this weekend at Pocono Raceway.

Wallace said Blickensderfer has an understanding of what he'll be looking to feel. Wallace won five races with Rev Racing in the K&N Pro Series East tour between 2010-2011 and was also victorious with J.D. Gibbs in 2012.

Six-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson had just one win and four top fives and never earned a pole in his first 72 Xfinity starts. Yeah, you can look at Trucks, say that was three, four years ago, two, three years ago, whenever that was. He has yet to win in the Xfinity Series, and this weekend's Pocono Green 250 will probably be his final start in this series.

"I would get the gestures and everything thrown out", Wallace said.

Darrell Wallace Jr. has been a name to learn in NASCAR for a while now. "We've been able to make the most of it with those guys".

When asked about the opportunity he said, "Driving the 43 vehicle is an unbelievable opportunity for any race auto driver".

"The opportunity will present itself when it's the right time". There's no need for me to force a hole, end up tearing up a race auto. The team is hoping for better results from Wallace, who is will remain Almirola's replacement driver until he is ready to return from his back injury, which could be the middle of August at the latest of his 8-12 week recovery timeline.

"I think everybody wanted to see this opportunity happen", Wallace said.

Will Wallace make a difference in ushering a new face of NASCAR?

"I could be their new favorite driver", he said.
