Which 'Mummy' Characters Might Return in the Dark Universe? [SPOILERS]

Which 'Mummy' Characters Might Return in the Dark Universe? [SPOILERS]

Cruise is the big name in Universal's opening effort to establish a cinematic universe around its classic monster characters (see sidebar), and investing in his star power is probably a smart move when it comes to reaching global audiences.

We've already heard about plans for the Dark Universe which include Johnny Depp as the Invisible Man and Javier Bardem as Frankenstein's Monster. After undergoing such a tiresome journey with this movie, we should all be asking "The Mummy" the same question. With the Tom Cruise movie opening Friday, critics are saying it's the worst Cruise film ever. Or something else entirely?

However, the presence of his character alone gives the film the sense that The Mummy is just the beginning of something bigger. They quickly find themselves on an ancient burial ground along with Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis), a would-be love interest for Nick, whom the script flips by having their sexual falling out occur off-screen, before we first meet them.

When Tom Cruise arrived at the place on the carpet where Wild Bill was waiting, it turned into more than just a question and answer session, it turned into a full-fledged acting lesson from the biggest movie star in the universe.

Russell Crowe's Dr. Henry Jekyll says these words to Tom Cruise's Nick Morton in the latest version of "The Mummy". Then in 1999, Universal scored a major box office success with Brendan Fraser and Rachel staring in the wild, entertaining, and CG-enhanced "The Mummy".

So our boy Nick Morton has quite the side business selling these stolen items, but when he stumbles across the tomb of a mummy, played by Sofia Boutella, she's not exactly happy to have guests.

In modern day, the three main leads Nick Morton (Tom Cruise), Chris Vail (Jake Johnson) and Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis) stumble upon a enormous tomb which was actually a prison for the ancient mummified evil princess, Ahmanet.

Lacking the campy fun of the franchise's most recent entries and failing to deliver many monster-movie thrills, The Mummy suggests a speedy unraveling for the Dark Universe.

We live in a world where every studio must have a cinematic universe. In his second feature, director Alex Kurtzman, who was last in charge of the Chris Pine vehicle People Like Us and wrote episodes of Star Trek:Discovery and the 2014 The Amazing Spider-Man 2, aims for some pretty standard action-movie beats but can't hit any of them right. "It's the kind of movie that Tom Cruise became a household name by avoiding at all costs".

Cruise and Wallis bring their charm in this what is supposed to be a common monster fighting, making "The Mummy" a zombie-raising action adventure film similar to what Fraser and Weisz did.

If you were to look strictly as his age - 55 - you'd wonder how much longer Cruise can keep up this act of being a major action star.
