Blow to Froome as Thomas crashes out of Tour

Blow to Froome as Thomas crashes out of Tour

Geraint Thomas is out of the Tour de France after crashing during stage nine from Nantua to Chambery on Sunday.

"He was conscious, it's reassuring, he is being transferred to the hospital", race doctor Florence Pommery said of Porte.

Porte's crash was the most dramatic as he clipped the grass verge on the inside of a bend on the lightning quick descent down the fearsome Mont du Chat, less than 25km from the finish. Remarkably, Ireland's Martin was able to get back on his bike and - after a second incident - ride back and join forces with Quintana.

At the time of the crash, AG2R La Mondiale were lighting up the race on the descent before the next hors categorie climb.

Briton Geraint Thomas has retired from the Tour de France after an injury.

With just over 30 kilometres remaining, Chris Froome had a mechanical error and had to change bikes.

Blow to Froome as Thomas crashes out of Tour

Thomas also crashed out of the Giro d'Italia in May - caused by a police motorbike - on stage nine, when he was Team Sky's race leader.

He crashed twice while wearing the yellow jersey, on stages two and four, and on Saturday went straight into a hay bale after he and Froome took a corner too fast on a descent during stage eight to Station des Rousses.

Uran, who has never finished higher than 23rd in the Tour, climbed to fourth in the general classification, 51 seconds behind Bardet.

If Quintana - 2:13 down in eighth place - kept his faint hopes of a first Tour crown alive, then the same can not be said of Contador: the former double Tour champion is now more than five minutes down on Froome in the GC.

The Australian went slightly off the narrow road and crashed across the surface into a rock on the other side of the road, taking out Dan Martin in the process.

Monday is a rest day and the fight for the overall title is set to resume next Thursday with the first big Pyrenean stage.
