DHS: Laptop ban put in place after explosive test destroyed airplane

David Lapan, a spokesman for the DHS, said the ban was lifted due to additional security measures that have been issued to all airlines and airports serving as last points of departure to the U.S. around the world.

A restriction put in place earlier this year previously barred laptops, tablets, cameras, and portable game consoles from the cabins of certain US -bound worldwide flights, following reports that terrorist organizations were eyeing methods for concealing explosives in large electronics.

No airlines are under restrictions for large personal electronic devices anywhere in the world because each has implemented additional security measures that ultimately make the global aviation community more secure, CBS News transportation correspondent Kris Van Cleave reports.

KELLY: We tested it on a real airplane on the ground, pressurized.

Asked about the initiative while touring a U.S. Coast Guard vessel in Southern California, Kelly said he believes those who help human traffickers - including parents who pay for their children to be brought to the U.S. illegally - should be arrested and prosecuted. And to say the least, it destroyed the airplane. The agency announced that the countries where the airports are located were complying with tightened security measures and anyone flying to the US can now bring a computer onto the plane.

And Kelly says every single airport, including the 10 in the Middle East and North Africa subjected to the initial laptop ban, now meet those initial requirements to enhance security across the board.

PATRICIA ROJAS-UNGAR: What we don't want is to create hurdles to travel that give people pause and cause them to question whether or not they want to take that trip to the United States.
