Israeli Security Measures Lead to Deaths, Violence

Abbas called for the removal of metal detectors from the al-Aqsa Mosque compound and Jerusalem's other holy sites late Friday, stating that people should be able to "pray with dignity".

The Middle East Quartet of Russian Federation, the US, the European Union and the United Nations issued a statement Saturday that expressed great concern for "the escalating tensions and violent clashes" in and around the Old City, where the revered place of worship is located.

Worshippers have been refusing to enter due to the new metal detectors, with Palestinians charging the step was an Israeli attempt to claim further control over the site.

On Saturday, two Palestinians were killed as the Israeli forces moved to demolish the home of a Palestinian who allegedly stabbed the three killed Israelis.

In an additional controversial security measure, Israel restricted entry to the mosque area and Old City on Friday to men aged 50 and over and women.

Amir Abdollahian stressed that putting restrictions on Palestinian worshipers in al-Aqsa Mosque runs counter to the worldwide law and the commitment the Israeli regime has undertaken, warning that stronger limitations on "the true owners of Palestine" would trigger a new Intifada.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denounced the attack on the Israeli family as "an act of terror, carried out by an animal who was incited with unfathomable hatred".

The metal detectors were put in after two Israeli police officers were killed there by Arab gunmen.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday condemned the clashes in which Israeli forces killed three Palestinians.

The attacker was identified by Israel Radio as a 19-year-old Palestinian from the West Bank village of Khobar near Ramallah.

The Arab League has called an emergency meeting of the Arab foreign ministers on Wednesday to discuss Israeli violations against Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque.

In protest, thousands of worshipers gathered for Friday prayers at various entrances to the sacred compound.

"What is happening today, unfortunately, is the completion of the project to Judaicise the Holy City and take over the old town", he said.
