Kentavious Caldwell-Pope lands $18 million deal with Lakers

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope lands $18 million deal with Lakers

The Lakers weren't in the picture, but now they have more young talent to play with their even younger core next season as LaVar Ball continues to profess that son Lonzo is carrying the team to the playoffs.

But, it seems as though the Lakers aren't done making moves this offseason, and they're attacking free agency with a full head of steam.

The Nets and Los Angeles Lakers have been linked with free-agent guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and there could be some movement this week. Do they need to sign a veteran such as Rondo to help tutor Ball? This year should be much different for Pope by joining a Lakers squad that now has plenty of new young talent.

Rondo, very similarly to Rose, as he had a solid season with the Bulls past year despite all of the off the court issues and front office troubles the Bulls were having. There had also been significant interest from several other teams across the league. It'll make life easier on the rookie and coach Luke Walton.

Right now, the Lakers do not have a true backup point guard.

The team has not been able to land an all-star free agent as of yet this summer, but Magic has been exercising to use patience considering guys like Paul George, Lebron James, and Russell Westbrook are all free agents next season.

The Pistons indicated they were ready to move on from Caldwell-Pope, their first-round draft pick (No. 8 overall) in 2013, when they traded for Avery Bradley last week.

This one's a bit tougher to gauge. A person with firsthand knowledge of the situation told the Free Press that a four-year, $80-million offer was turned down by Caldwell-Pope. If he continues to improve his 3-point shot, he could become one of the NBA's better two-way players. Jordan Clarkson should go back to his sixth man role with Caldwell-Pope in the fold. Regardless, Caldwell-Pope would be an excellent addition both for scoring with the second unit and also for his defense.

ESPN.com's Brian Windhorst was first to report the one-year, $18 million agreement late Tuesday night.

The most realistic option is probably Rondo, though.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was looking for a big payday in free agency.
