Latest development suggests Virgil van Dijk could be Merseyside bound after all

Southampton reported the matter to the Premier League and fearing disciplinary action, Liverpool withdrew their interest in van Dijk - though it has been no secret that the 26-year-old remains Klopp's first-choice defensive target.

It does seem that Southampton are very much Liverpool's own feeder club - although none can doubt they make the Merseyside club pay for the privilege of having that unofficial status.

The Dutch worldwide van Dijk was not used during the Saints 2-2 draw pre-season draw with Brentford and will play no part in the clubs pre-season tour of France which will commence this week.

The 26-year-old Dutch global cnetral defender has been training on his own after telling new boss Mauricio Pellegrino that he wants to leave the club.

"Now he is not involved with the team because psychologically he is not 100%", he said.

Despite ongoing speculation, Pellegrino maintained last week that Van Dijk is not for sale.

On a day where Virgil van Dijk looks likely to be heading to Liverpool they also look set to miss out on their top transfer target.

Despite that, Pellegrino maintained that his relationship with Van Dijk was "excellent" and that the Southampton hierarchy had made it plainly clear that he would not be sold this summer.

When I was talking with him, the boy said that he is not available to play because he wants to leave. Today, the latest on Liverpool's pursuit of Virgil van Dijk...

Liverpool, needless to say, are hoping that Southampton's resolve on that front breaks shortly and the club decide they'd rather have a significant transfer fee to invest in new players than a player who clearly wants away from the club.
