NYPD officer shot, killed in 'unprovoked' attack in the Bronx

A female New York City police officer is in critical condition early Wednesday morning after she was shot in the face while sitting in a police vehicle in the Bronx, law enforcement sources told local media.

Police say authorities fatally shot the suspected assailant, 34-year-old Alexander Bonds, while he was fleeing the scene.

She has been identified as 48-year old Miosotis Familia, a 12-year veteran of the force.

A New York City Police Department officer was killed early Wednesday after being "ambushed" inside a mobile command unit. Familia's partner was also in the van and was not injured, according to police.

Police Commissioner James P O'Neill said the attack was unprovoked. Two other officers spotted a man running down the street about a block away. "Nah, police be killing them and saying that an inmate killed them".

The man was apparently headed right toward it and fired through the glass, according to the police report. It is not clear who's bullet hit the bystander.

In his statement, O'Neill said the vehicle in which Familia was shot had been parked in that position since March this year, due to an increase in gun violence and gang activity in the area. He later served about seven years in prison on a robbery conviction and was paroled in May 2013.

She was assigned to the 46 Precinct in the Bronx.

Familia was the mother of three young children. Officers opened fire and killed Bonds, accidentally striking a bystander, who is now in "stable condition", in the process.

Familia's partner immediately called for assistance after the fatal incident unfolded just after midnight, desperately shouting into his radio for help.

Bonds was out on parole after serving almost seven years for a robbery in Syracuse, reports The New York Post.

"The city was celebrating our Independence Day", Mayor de Blasio said during a press conference after the shooting. The name of the police officer has not yet been released.

The officer was rushed to the hospital, but did not survive.
